Ultramundo: A Mezcal That Redefines Excellence

Ultramundo secures #14 in VinePair's World Spirits Competition, celebrated for its exceptional craftsmanship, rarity, and world-class mezcal profile.

Quality as Meaning, Not an Empty Word

What Does Quality Truly Mean in Mezcal? Quality is one of those words that sound impressive but are rarely scrutinized. What does it truly mean? In the case of Ultramundo, quality is more than an adjective; it is the convergence of rarity, balance, and artisanal craftsmanship deeply rooted in tradition. This mezcal embodies the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi, the beauty of imperfection, but with a refinement that can only be achieved through an unwavering commitment to excellence. Yet, there is one primary reason this mezcal has gained international recognition: it is, quite simply, delicious.

Ultramundo Mezcal: Recognition for Visionaries

Recognition for Visionaries, Not Just for Mexico Beyond being a cultural achievement for Mexico, this recognition is a victory for the Garnier family, the visionaries behind Ultramundo. At Rancho Pelayo, located in the enigmatic Zone of Silence, they have uncovered a unique gem: the Lamparillo agave. This agave is a miracle of patience and dedication, taking two decades to mature, yielding only one bottle per plant, and requiring monumental effort to produce. It is an example of how the passion for creating something transcendent can break barriers and captivate the world’s most discerning palates.

A Taste of the Desert

The flavor of Ultramundo is a liquid narrative of the desert. It is complex, with lactic notes derived from its slow, spontaneous fermentation. While the cooking takes place in wood-fired pits, the smoke does not dominate; instead, notes of oregano and aromatic plants native to its arid region of origin emerge. Each sip is a fragment of the desert, an intimate connection to the terroir that gives it life.

More than just a recognition for Mexican culture, this honor belongs to a family driven by an otherworldly intuition and the desire to create something truly unique and transcendent. They have unearthed a gem in the desert. What makes this mezcal exceptionally special is the agave it uses: “Lamparillo.” This rare agave, virtually unknown in the mezcal world, takes 20 years to mature before it can be harvested. It grows wild, with an exceptionally low sugar concentration, yielding just one bottle per plant. The production costs are so high that, if consumers understood what goes into making it, the “steep” $150 price tag would seem like a bargain.

This mezcal represents the pinnacle of premium craftsmanship—scarce, expensive, and extraordinarily challenging to produce. Yet, it is the product of the relentless effort and dream of a visionary family who has succeeded in bringing it to the international stage. It is a true source of pride for all Mexicans.

Ultramundo is #14 in the World According to Vinepair

VinePair’s recognition not only places Ultramundo on the map but also underscores something fundamental: this mezcal is not just a drink; it is a reflection of its environment. In the tradition of French wine terroir, Ultramundo captures the essence of the desert where it is born, translating the landscape into flavor. Just as Juan Rulfo evoked the Mexican land in his stories, Ultramundo does so in every bottle, reminding us that what is authentic always finds its voice.
