When you find a tequila or mezcal you love, you want to know what makes it special. You learn about the agave, the process, and the person making it. You share it with friends.
As more people discover it, another question becomes important: Who will decide what happens next?
Growing demand brings choices about production, investment, and the pace of expansion. Those choices can strengthen a producer’s future. They can also put pressure on the qualities that made the spirit worth seeking out.
The people with authority over those decisions shape what reaches your glass. That is why, at PKGD, we care deeply about producers retaining meaningful authority over their products and brands. Our responsibility is to help those producers succeed while protecting that authority.
These questions led me to write The Entrustment: A Stewardship System for Protecting What Matters Under Pressure. If you read PKGD Magazine because you care about the people behind a bottle, this book takes you further into their world and the responsibilities we share with them.
For more than a decade, producer families have entrusted PKGD with helping their brands reach the United States. Working alongside them has taught me to ask what success should make possible, and what must remain protected along the way.
I began putting those lessons into a White Paper about agave spirits, producer ownership, and transparency. But the questions kept reaching beyond our industry. I could see them in the company we were building, in relationships, and in my own responsibilities.
I wanted to preserve the judgment behind our decisions so that the people who came after me could understand it, challenge it, and carry it forward. That became the purpose of The Entrustment.
Juan Pablo Elorriaga, Creative Director of PKGD México, wrote the foreword. His questions about PKGD’s purpose helped set the project in motion. He has helped shape the cultural and creative foundations of our work, and his foreword brings the perspective of someone who helped these ideas take shape.
His foreword asks a question about the people behind a brand: “What do they refuse to lose, regardless of the price?”
The book follows the connections between trust, authority, incentives, and the decisions people make under pressure. It gives language to patterns that can be difficult to recognize while we are living through them.
One is distance: the separation between the people making decisions and those who live with the consequences. Another is proximity, the deliberate work of reducing that separation so that understanding can improve judgment.
Through stories and observations from the work, The Entrustment invites you to:
These ideas can sharpen how you think about the spirits you buy and the businesses you support. They also become useful wherever you carry responsibility for something you want to see endure.
One phrase runs through the book: “Pressure reveals structure.”
You may recognize that moment when a promising opportunity tests a partnership, when growth stretches a team, or when work begins to crowd out responsibilities at home. The decision becomes clearer when you can name what deserves protection and who will carry the consequences.
This is where the book reaches beyond agave spirits. It asks you to consider what has been placed in your care and what the people who follow you will inherit.
I wrote it first for my family, our producer partners, and the people I work beside. I am sharing it with readers of PKGD Magazine because the curiosity that brings you here already reaches beyond the label. You care about how things are made and the people responsible for them.
The Entrustment carries that curiosity further. It offers a way to examine what sustains the things we value, and the part each of us can play in protecting them.
Get your copy and read it with something you care about in mind. A favorite spirit may bring you to the book. The questions you take from it can help you think more clearly about what you want to protect in your own life.
